What services do you provide?
We offer a full range of architectural services from concept design, through to planning applications, technical design, 3D visualisations, construction supervision and contract administration.
Due to our experience and expertise in low energy design we also offer low impact design advice and consultancy on all aspects of a project.
For more information on the process and the architectural services we can offer please our journal entry ‘The Process’
How much does it cost to employ an Architect?
Architects charge different rates depending on the complexity and size of the project.
We can tailor our services to suit most budgets. The initial meeting is always free. From then on our fees vary project by project depending on the scope of work and our level of involvement.
It is sometimes based on a percentage of the construction (typically 5 to 15%), or sometimes we find it more cost effective and value for money to the client to work on a lump sum or time charge basis.
Before we begin work on any project we will agree our fees and services with you in writing so there are no surprises further down the line.
We also believe that good design can save time and money on any project and if you offset the cost of your architect against this you will certainly be getting value for money.
What type of buildings do you design?
We are interested in a wide variety of projects. However, we are more interested in 'who' we are working for rather than the type of building. It is this relationship that is key to a successful project at all scales.
Why should I hire an architect?
Architects are highly skilled and professionally trained to turn your aspirations into reality. They will guide you through the design, planning and construction process whether you are constructing a new building or adapting an existing property.
We apply impartial and creative thinking to projects large and small. We add value, whether from maximising light and space, adding functionality, or achieving the best return on your investment.
"A good architect actually pays for themselves - more than once. You will reap the reward and the building will be hugely better and deliver much better value for it." Kevin McCloud, Grand Designs
How much will the building work cost?
This is difficult to answer. Unfortunately building work is not like building factory made cars where you can predict the cost accurately. However we shall provide cost advice form the early stages, this is either based on simple sqm rates for the type of building or we engage with a cost consultant to provide more detailed input.
This way we make sure we get to the building stage with a good understanding of what the building is going to cost. Once we have the full technical information we can then get a firm price from the contractor
How long will the project take?
This often depends on the size of the project and the size of the contractor you employ to build it. The design stage can take anything from 3 months to 3 years and similar to the build. We can advise as soon as we have an idea of the scope of the project and we often produce a project programme after our very first meeting.
What are the chances of us getting planning permission?
The only refusal we had at planning we won on appeal. This 100% record we put down to understanding planning policy and being able to implement it. We simply wouldn't put something in for consent if we didn't think it should be awarded planning or listed building consent. We also have a great relationship with the Local Planning Authorities we work within we helps us identify any issues early and resolve them.
Can you ensure my budget wont be exceeded?
We cannot guarantee anything but we can certainly identify if your budget is not significant to achieve your brief. The key to this is having a very open and honest discussion about money during the early design stages. There is no point in getting carried away with the scope of the project if there isn't the money to deliver it.
